Gold rates looking up, traders expect more sales than last year’s

Gold rates had been strengthening since yesterday. Before Saturday, the bullion market was not looking up for some time, however, the markets turned around yesterday and started strengthening. Due to the auspicious hours timing, Dhanteras is being celebrated on two days which led to an upward trend in market leading to shine back to the market as buyers did not shy away from buying the strengthening gold on the first day. On Sunday, gold with 24k was trading at Rs 51,290 per 10 gm in the morning, an increase of Rs10 from yesterday’s closing price.

Gold with 24k was trading at Rs 51,720 per 10 gm, Rs 51,290/10 gm and Rs 51,450/10gm in Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi, respectively. 24k gold was trading at Rs 51,450 per 10 gm, Rs 51,340/10 gm, Rs 51,290/10 gm in Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad, respectively.

Gold rate in the country was trading at Rs 50,400 per 10 gm on October 15, which was declining about Rs600 from its last trading price.

However, the rates of silver were trading flat at Rs 57,700 per 1 kg in Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai on Sunday.

Gold rates were falling sharply in India, ahead of Diwali and Dhanteras. However, on Saturday, the markets recovered and gave its shine to the gold jewelers and traders. On October 22, in India the 22-carat gold rate gained to Rs 47,000, and the 24-carat gold rate gained to Rs 51,280/10 grams, increasing sharply by Rs 750 – Rs 830, respectively. The silver rate also gained to Rs 5,770/100 gm.

Traders are anticipating a pickup in the demand for gold and silver as the markets are buzzing and also expect 20 per cent higher sales from last year’s Diwali and Dhanteras. (ANI)

Xi Jinping has secured a third term as China’s leader

Chinese President Xi Jinping has secured an unprecedented third term as the country’s top leader, putting him among the likes of most influential leaders China has seen since the Chinese Communist Party was founded by Mao Zedong.

Xi Jinping was elected general secretary of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at the committee’s first plenary session held on Sunday, the state media outlet reported Xinhua reported. The session presided over by Xi, was attended by 203 members of the 20th CPC Central Committee and 168 alternate members. Xi was also named chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission at the session.

The once-in-five-year National Congress concluded after a week-long meeting. The Congress revealed the newly-formed Central Committee, the party’s main leadership body, which included Xi. Of the 205 members listed, only 11 are women, CNN reported.

The Chinese Premier, the second most powerful official after Xi, is not listed in the new Central Committee, which means that Li will retire from his party role.

Saturday’s preceding was marred by controversy surrounding former President Hu Jintao’s unceremonious exit from Congress. The 79-year-old former leader, Xi Jinping’s predecessor, was unexpectedly led out of the hall by two men during the closing ceremony.

According to Chinese state media, Hu was “not feeling well” when he was unexpectedly removed from the closing ceremony of the 20th Congress of China’s Communist Party on Saturday.

“Xinhuanet reporter Liu Jiawen has learned that Hu Jintao insisted on attending the closing session… despite the fact that he has been taking time to recuperate recently,” Xinhua said on Twitter.

“When he was not feeling well during the session, his staff, for his health, accompanied him to a room next to the meeting venue for a rest. Now, he is much better,” the state agency added.

The congress took place at one of the most perilous periods in international affairs in recent years. A war is raging in Ukraine as President Vladimir Putin attempts to burnish his credentials as a great Russian leader, and China remains a staunch supporter of this would-be tsar.

At the same time, Taiwan Strait tensions are at their highest in decades, as China attempts to pummel Taipei into acquiescence. (ANI)

Poor cellular signal irks Jumgund residents in Kupwara

Kupwara: Last year when mobile tower was installed at Jumgund a remote area close to Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara, people were happy to witness the development. However, the weak signal is giving the subscribers a tough time.

The residents said that though the mobile tower was made operational following its installation but the signal has been confined to 100 meters only due to which people suffer a lot.

“Last year when the mobile tower was made operational, we could hear our mobiles ringing. We were so happy regarding this development but as soon as we reached home, our happiness turned into gloom as we were unable to make calls due to non-availability of network on our mobiles,” a student from the area said.

“What is the fun of installing tower when it does not work. Whenever we call anyone, the call instantly drops. Till the signal is not upgraded to whole area, it is of no use.,” he added.

The residents also complained about the non-availability of mobile internet service which has especially shattered the student community of Jumgund.

“After the mobile connectivity was restored here, we were much optimistic about the mobile internet service but to our surprise, we have not been given the privilege of using the internet,” another student said.

“Due to lack of mobile connectivity in Jumgund we are forced to stay in rented rooms in Kupwara to avail the facility of internet. After the partial mobile connectivity was restored in Jumgund, we were optimistic about the launch of internet also so that we could stay back and take online classes in Jumgund but don’t know when our woes will end,” he said. “Whatever I have done or achieved in life, can be achieved by anybody’’ Insha told RK

28-years-old Insha hails from Beerwah village of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, and is pursuing a Master in Social Work (MSW) from Kashmir University and is an international wheelchair basketball player.
Insha was selected recently to represent India in the international Wheelchair basketball tournament to be held at Sports Complex Noida, Delhi this year.

Besides Insha, Ishrat Akhtar was another girl from the valley who was selected for a national camp held at the sports complex Shadipora, Bandipora, organized by the Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS) and Jammu Kashmir Sports Council (JKSC) under the supervision of the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India (WBFI).

“I will go through hard training to meet the standard of the upcoming international championship and I am confident that we will win the trophy for our country as we have the best wheelchair basketball players in our team,” she said.

Despite the harsh reality of life, she not only continued her studies but pursued basketball as a sport.
“It is only sports that changed my life, I want to do something for others, for myself, and make a name for my father and mother,” she says.

She represented India in the USA in March 2019 and participated in the national championship in Mohali Punjab in the same year. Due to her efforts, the team reached the quarter-finals for the first time. For this feat Insha was declared player of the year – 2019.

“I want to work hard and make Kashmir and the country proud of me,” she says, adding that she wants to prove her mettle in international events.
I
n 2009, at the age of 15, Insha met with an accident causing her to lose her standing power that completely changed her life.

“It has been 11 years now since I met with that accident in which my spinal cord got injured and since then, I am wheelchair-bound,” she recalls.

Describing the ordeal of the accident, she says she was studying a chemistry book on the second floor of the home as she was an aspiring medical student.

“At that time I felt like vomiting. Next, I opened my eyes in SKIMS hospital,” she says.

It was after that accident Insha was not able to stand on her own feet as the accident had paralyzed her both limbs.

She says that when she came to know that her spinal cord got injured and she cannot stand on her own legs anymore, it seemed to her as if her life had ended, and there was nothing to live for.

“My parents were hiding from me the truth that I cannot stand on my legs anymore, as I was aspiring for medical studies. However, when I was told that I could not continue my medical studies. I felt like that was the end of my life,’’ she said with tears rolling down from her eyes.

“I was in depression for five consecutive years after the accident,” she says, and added, “I used to think what would happen to me as I had lost all dreams and will to live. But I am grateful to Almighty that my family never left me alone and supported me all thick and thin.”

After being insisted on by her father, she went to Shafkat Rehabilitation center at Bemina for physiotherapy. One day when she saw J&K wheelchair players playing basketball. “That was the moment when I felt if they can play this, why can’t I,” she recalled.

She said a differently-abled national player, Mohammad Rafi Paray, approached her asking if she wanted to play and she nodded her head in affirmation.

Insha credits her basketball success to Paray, Dr. Saleem Wani, and her parents for supporting her in times of adversity and depression.

“Though it took me a long time to accept this reality, But, once I realized, I started taking everything positively and saw my disability as a challenge which had become a hurdle in my way to success,” she said.

She believes once one is determined enough to do something in life, the Almighty comes to his help, besides the people’s support. “With willpower one can see oneself in a better position and could overcome any adversity in life,” she adds. (RK)
